Angie Parker’s distinctive and intricate floor art and fabric creations are hand-woven using long established rug weaving techniques, such as Krokbragd, which she combines with her instinctive and daring approach to colour. It is the creative process of importing a contemporary element to the time-honoured techniques of rug weaving and the responses from the viewer which most excites her. Producing rugs to the highest standard is also paramount and she prides herself on impeccable selvedges.
Her often ostentatious approach to design evolved during the time when she didn’t create for an audience or marketplace. A year spent living in India and more recently the dynamic graffiti in her neighbourhood in Bristol have influenced the fabulously gaudy palette which is intrinsic to her weaving. Parker says of her work: “There was such warmth shown to me as a visitor in India. I loved the humid sun-drenched market streets filled with vibrant colour. There was also a low-level political tension which occasional came to the surface. That’s what I aim for in my work now—aesthetically pleasing, but not always harmonious.”
