Sophie Stamp creates tactile and kinetic jewellery objects in precious metal, inspired by industrial, horological and vintage paraphernalia. Her pieces develop as a result of simplifying and re-working mechanisms, implements and apparatus. Disassembling an old piece of machinery is like exposing a treasure trove bursting with unusual shapes and elegant forms, from which to draw inspiration. The components interact with one another as does the wearer with a piece of jewellery; rolling, spinning, rotating ….
From mesmerising kinetic pendants and hinged lockets embellished with pure gold, to her signature rolling rings, each piece is individually handcrafted by Sophie in her studio. Following a year's postgraduate residency at the prestigious Bishopsland jewellery & silversmithing workshops near Reading, she is now based in vibrant Hackney Wick in London. Sophie was a participant of the of the Crafts Council's 'Hothouse 3' mentoring scheme for new makers and also recently became a QEST scholar.
