Kyffin: A Celebration

14th - 30th August 2008

Designer Bookbinders is one of the foremost societies devoted to the art and craft of hand bookbinding, with the aim of promoting excellence in this field by means of exhibitions, lectures, publications and masterclasses. Its Fellows and Licentiates have been invited to bind 'Kyffin - A Celebration', published by Gwasg Gregynog, one of Britain's major private presses, as a tribute to one of Wale's most distinguished artists, Sir Kyffin Williams, who died in 2006.
The exhibiting binders are a very disparate group of people who work in different parts of the country, in very different ways. The starting point is, of course, the book itself, but the finished bindings are as different from one another as the binders are themselves. It is fascinating to see how they capture the spirit of Kyffin's work in their own individual creativity.
This is a unique opportunity to see these bookbindings in London only at Contemporary Applied Arts.

A special film, 'Seventy Years in Bookbinding: A Portrait of Bernard Middleton' will be showing throughout the exhibition.
It is a fascinating and moving insight into the remarkable world of one of the foremost craftsmen of our time.
