Graeme Hawes

‘I became captivated by the hostile environment of a glassblowing workshop from my first day at Sunderland University. There is heat oozing from every aperture. There is a deafening noise from the compressors and burners. There is broken glass strewn across the concrete floor and yet there is the facility to create something quite beautiful and delicate.’

Since successfully completing his masters at the Royal College of Art, Graeme Hawes has spent his professional life combining teaching with his own glass making practice.

Hawes’ work encompasses small batch production for galleries and retail outlets through to large scale lighting and bespoke commissions for individuals, hotels around the world and well respected lighting and chandelier companies. His work includes the use of many traditional handmade techniques combined with a very contemporary sensibility.
