Katharine Coleman engraves on clear lead crystal forms, overlaid with coloured glass, blown to her design. First she cuts and polishes the top surface of the glass before it is engraved, so that one can see inside the piece. The engraved decoration on the outside reflects and refracts onto the inner surface, creating an illusion of one body floating inside another. The optical properties of glass fascinate Coleman; she feels they provide a rich world for the artist. Her inspiration for her work ranges from natural history to the modern urban landscape.
