Laurance Simon

I have been a ceramicist since 1986. Having opted out of a degree in languages to reconnect with my first passion: clay. And its endless possibilities are still a fascination for me.

I have always been interested in the world of nature. Whether I am walking in nature or visiting the fabulous London Zoo, I will mentally register shapes, colours, patterns, and I will fill sketchbooks with drawings or doodles to pursue later when I am back in the studio.

My sculptures have an element of storytelling, they borrow from my love of the absurd and surrealism. They can be whimsical and humorous. They depict little slices of life. I chose animals rather than humans because I enjoy the element of surprise and the unexpected and because I feel a connection to them. They are not perfect anatomically, they are there to delight.
