Kate Maestri is a London based artist. She studied public art at Chelsea School of Art, and Architectural Glass at Central St. Martins. For the last 15 years she has been collaborating with architects on large scale architectural glass commissions. She also works on smaller scale glass wall sculptures for exhibition.
Her gallery work includes a solo show at Contemporary Applied Arts and artist in residence at The Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture. Her public art commissions include an award winning glass installation at Portman Square, London with architects Jestico + Whiles, and a structural glass balustrade which runs through the main concourse of The Sage Music Centre with architects Foster + Partners.
"I am an architectural artist. My central precept is that my work should be site specific and integrated into the architecture. My large-scale glass installations become part of the structure and formation of the building rather than something that is applied later. Working in collaboration with architects and engineers I aspire to produce art that responds harmoniously to the architecture.
This new work for the Crafted City Pavilion reflects the design of the building. The glass integrates with the uniform symmetry of the vertical timbers. Glowing colour, that appears to be floating, illuminates the chapel like interior. Antique mouth-blown glass bestows a sparkling translucency."
