Out of Sight:
Drawing in the Lives of Makers
12.09.14 - 19.10.14
CAA gallery is delighted to celebrate the 2014 London Design Festival with a group exhibition featuring fifteen renowned contemporary makers. Opening on 12 September, Out of Sight looks at the intimate relationship between drawing and making and includes significant work by Felicity Aylieff (ceramics), Laura Ellen Bacon (willow), Kyra Cane (ceramics), Helen Carnac (metal and mixed media), Dorothy Hogg (jewellery), Chris Keenan (ceramics), Rob Kesseler (ceramics), Kate Malone (ceramics), Michael Eden (glass and ceramics), Alice Kettle (embroidered textiles), Kevin Pollard (costume), Jacqueline Mina (jewellery), Jon Mills (metal), Junko Mori (metal) and Fred Baier (furniture).
Drawing is often considered by makers to be at the heart of their creative expression, although it is something which the public rarely sees. Out of Sight: Drawing in the Lives of Makers will foreground this process, showing drawings, sketches, doodles and visual notes next to finished objects. Out of Sight contains insights into the creative process and illuminates the centrality of drawing as a means of turning ideas and visions into reality.
Objects in this show will range from an exquisite silver piece by Junko Mori and new work by ceramicist Kate Malone to opera costumes by Kevin Pollard, and other work by well-known craft makers not previously shown at CAA. Makers' concepts and inspirations as well as prototypes and finished work will illustrate some of the many different routes craftspeople take to reach the production of a complete object.
As guest curator, ceramicist Kyra Cane, has observed, “Drawing is a fundamental part of creative practice. Some use pencil and paper, others collage, computers and iPads, cameras, sketchbooks, paint or sticks of charcoal. There are makers who create objects that are in fact drawings in three dimensions and those who need to be surrounded by their drawings in order to make. There are makers who draw in their heads or think about their work through the action of drawing, and those who need to plan and explore ideas on paper before working in three dimensions; for some, technology has become their means of expression, and there are those who collate and collect imagery for reference. It is this hidden activity that I seek in the work of the makers and artists I have focused on in this exhibition.”
The exhibition includes work by the following makers.
