Peter Starkey

In 1973 I attended the Studio Pottery course at Harrow College of Art and began full-time potting in Hunworth, Norfolk, making salt glazed stoneware. My work at that time was mainly domestic ware and occasional one-off decorative pieces. At that time I was one of a group of potters revivifying the technique of salt glaze in Britain, from which a distinctive school of practise emerged. This enabled British salt glaze ceramics to make a unique and significant impact both in Britain, Europe and beyond. In 1977 I published ‘Saltglaze’, a text book which helped and encouraged potters worldwide to engage with this exciting and hitherto mysterious technique.

My work draws upon a wide range of references from within ceramic tradition, architecture, material culture and contemporary design. These are expressed through ongoing experimentation with form and surface. The work aims to find a balance between qualities of usefulness and ornamentation.
