Benedikt Strebel

For the last twenty years, a large part of my focus has been on the architectural application of my ceramic work. I’m intrigued by the dynamic between the historically functional aspect of ceramics and by the richness of the painted / glazed surface as an expressive medium. Each tile is an individual element that can be arranged into compositions in combination with materials such as glass, steel, concrete or wood. Glazed ceramics alongside these other materials create a beautiful accent integrated into architecture or landscape.

I’m intrigued by the juxtaposition of ceramic’s permanence and the changeable quality of elements like water, light and plants. Ceramic material permanently installed in a natural environment takes on a life of its own.

The collaboration with artists, designers and community people builds the path that drives my creative process. The limitations arising from satisfying requirements set forth by a client or the public art process often create fascinating challenges that push me into exciting new territory of making art.
