Penelope Batley

Penelope Batley’s interest in the unexpected and overlooked has fuelled her inventive and witty approach, creating work which has an opulent, escapist humour, drawing from childhood memories. She captures the playfulness and childlike delight of the gigantic or surreal, where familiar things are not so familiar. Penelope’s contribution to this exhibition is the re-invention of unused objects. In describing her work, Penelope says: ’Two years ago I was passed a box of glass lanterns, dusty, unwanted, unfashionable and outdated. Taken from the closed Bolingbroke Hospital, they were the ghosts of a former place.
