Julie Arkell

Julie Arkell is one of England’s best contemporary folk artists. She works with papier-mâché and mixed media. Her work here captures the fragility and uncertainty of life. She is inspired by the precious objects left behind and by the discarded fragments of everyday life. ‘I was delighted to receive such lovely small pieces of memorabilia from the Bolingbroke – pieces that hold the essence of the people who owned them. Each piece hold traces of these people and their story. My work tries to capture these stories, these past moments, evoking the individual and their memory.’ By using snippets of text with objects that already have an emotional history, Julie keeps their sentiment alive and gives them new vitality: bringing past and present together.
