Chris Keenan

It was only when I began to buy, live with and use handmade pots in the late 1980s that I came to understand the place they could occupy in my domestic life. This realisation crystallised into one of the initial impulses that led me to learn to make pots.

The first pots I made were mugs. The form has changed, been revisited, scaled up or down but remains a constant in my making life. My comprehension of the intimate relationship between a mug and its user came someway down the line. The importance of the mug within the lexicon of domestic wares was illustrated further when I collaborated with Habitat to produce the tableware range SORA - the mug was one of the first, and key, pieces that I was asked to work on.

My favoured mug at the moment is one made by Sun Kim that I acquired via a pot-swap before Christmas - lovely to hold, great handle for my hand, lush glaze, good tastes great in it! This pot lets me pay her a favourite compliment - "I use it every day".
