Recently Steve Dixon has worked together with Alison Welsh on a project called Cotton Exchange, looking at the relationship between the North West of England and Gujarat in India, through a shared connection with cotton textile manufacture. The outcomes of this project, a series of installation works at Queen St. Mill in Burnley, Lancashire. Both of the installations for Burnley focussed on the absence of human presence in the contemporary textile mill environment, a common factor in both Lancashire and Gujarat.
The collaborative work on display brings together Dixon’s interest in the incidental artefacts of textile workers’ lives and Welsh’s interest in working with Indian and English tailors to manufacture traditional workers’ garments.
