Kate McBride

I am influenced by period ceramics ranging from the work of Wedgwood, Meissen, Chelsea and Derby porcelain, to Sèvres, Limoges and beyond. I try to keep to the spirit of their designs while introducing my own stories and thoughts, often influenced by things in the new, soap operas, and other relationships. Issues like global warming, hunting and waste influence me. My work is a collage of clay and these ideas using both borrowed thoughts and original material.

I use delicate porcelain but disrupt the fracture design, the objects having been made, broken and then put back together again. So that, by disrupting the design, the pieces feel awkward and uncomfortable. It reflects today’s throw away attitude in which a broken object becomes immediately worthless and therefore discarded.
