Katharine Coleman

Engraving on blown, colour overlaid, clear lead crystal forms, the work requires close collaboration with other artists who blow the glass for Katherine to design.  Potter Morgan Glass, Carl Nordbruch and Sonja Klingler currently make glass. After annealing, the top surface of the glass is then cut, ground and polished so that when the subsequent engravings on the outside surface are viewed, it is also possible to look inside the piece, to see all the refractions of the outside repeated on the inner surface, creating an illusion of one body floating inside another.

Wheel engraving on glass does not need to be traditional in either style or content. Nevertheless, Katherine uses traditional techniques, engraving the glass surface with lathe-mounted copper, diamond and stone wheels, preferring the crispness and fine finish associated with these.  The inspiration for her work ranges widely from natural history to the modern urban landscape. Katherine’s work has been exhibited widely in the UK, in France, Spain, Germany, the Czech Republic, USA and Japan.
