Sean Campbell

I grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland during the 1970’s. It was a time and place where many people looked inwardly for resolution. I instinctively looked outwards and I was lucky enough to grasp every opportunity to live, work and travel abroad. The direct experience of travel combined with the perspective that came from returning home fuelled a desire for greater understanding of the world and the people who live in it. This remains the driving force behind my life and work.
I was reminded that as a child I would watch the clouds in the sky and flames in the fire and conjure up characters and stories out of the forms that materialized. As an artist I have returned to that same process. The –scape series offer a reminder of the potential of our imagination. The creative process for each piece is long. Each layer builds on the one before, with time and space to respond before adding the next. It is the extension of this process that I present to the viewer. An abstracted image created by manipulating colour and light, pushing the physical and conceptual boundaries of the medium. Providing a metaphor for the self, through which we gain a subtle moment of freedom and a sideways glance at understanding.
