Kate Henderson
Kate Henderson was born in Edinburgh in 1970. She trained in Stained glass at Edinburgh College of art in the early nineties and has since built up a varied portfolio of commissioned stained glass panels and windows for public and private buildings across Scotland and Europe. Highlights include winning a commission from a shortlist of twelve glass artists, for the Patrick Geddes Memorial panel, installed in the Edinburgh Council headquarters.
She exhibits her paintings in selected exhibitions with the Royal Scottish watercolour society, the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine arts & the Society of Scottish Artists and more recently with the Royal Watercolour Society in the 21st Century watercolour exhibition held at the Bankside Gallery in London. She has had three solo painting exhibitions in Scotland as well as taking part in many Gallery group shows and in 2004 won the Cuthbert New young artist award at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine arts.
Kate’s subject matter reflects her interest in Historic Architecture and Archaeology. She is intrigued by the colours and textures from worn surfaces from these buildings and found objects. She creates painting and glass work which involves layering a variety of materials, and rubbing back through the layers with abrasives to reveal or partly reveal the surface below. This process also protects the fragments within the work. More recently she has begun to overlap and combine the materials and thought processes used in making glass and drawings. Her colour has become less vibrant and more muted. She applies material like graphite powder to a sandblasted glass surface with the interest in making a non permanent work; that through time the image/surface will disappear or fade away. She examines and displays this through different qualities of light; from the fleeting shadows cast from the sunlight to fluorescent sources.
She feels that this new work responds to becoming a mother and losing her father after a long deteriorating illness. The circle has become a symbol which represents to her the continuous cycle of life. She is interested in the fragmenting of its shape and re organising the individual sections of the circle to represent and reflect the delicate journey of life.
