Karen Akester

In trying to capture remnants of the past I am dealing with fragile material, attempting to replace an idea with something tangible…
Much of my current work involves piecing together artifacts to create small histories.

“We remind again that the luggage must contain nothing but the children’s
personal items.  Any forbidden additions will result in the child not being taken
along.”

The kinder transport journey, memory into history.

I am fascinated by migration from a historical point of view and how it has not only changed the lives of individuals but has continued the stories of communities.  Migration is mostly born of need and sometimes desperation, never more so perhaps than the Kinder transport which in 1938 parliament agreed to accept from Europe to the UK an unspecified amount of children up to the age of seventeen a decision which saved the lives of some 10,000 children.
Kindertransport deals specifically with the moment of transition when children left their homeland in the most traumatic of circumstances and yet carrying only meager possessions where given the opportunity of a new life.
