Cathryn Shilling

In my career as a graphic designer I learnt to solve different problems in a variety of ways and I have come to realize that this has formed the bases of my approach to working in glass, I have always found glass a fascinating and seductive material. For me it is the perfect medium, giving me creative and technical freedom and enabling me to produce something tactile, tangible and enduring.
Through my work I explore the fluidity of glass as a liquid and its sculptural quality as a solid as well as its transparency in the use of colour and light. This body of work, which I have titled Synergy, is produced by fusing and slumping but it is not quite what it seems at first glance.
In the Synergy Series I, by using texture, light and colour in a surprising way my intention is to evoke a stylised sense of human movement without literally recreating the form of ta body within fabric. My aim is to create collaboration between entities, evoking a symphony of movement greater than that of the individual components.
