When I started glassmaking 28 years ago, I was immediately struck by the spontaneity of the process, unlike till then my experience of working with clay. After four years of education, I was very lucky to meet a glassmaker called Ronnie Wilkinson. He had worked at Whitfiars Glass in Harrow since the age of fourteen, following on from his father, his grandfather, his brothers worked there and so did his uncles. Decades of knowledge were at my disposal, if I was prepared to work for it!  Many years later I was made creative director for Salviati and manager of the small factory on the island of Murano. I worked along side twelve glassmakers whose knowledge similar to that of Ronnieís went back decades, if not centuries. These two experiences underline for me the importance of appreciating traditions and of the disciplines of learning a craft.
