Deborah Fladgate
“In the summer of 1979 I graduated from West Surrey College of Art and Design and took part in the first exhibition of my glass. Thirty years on the ‘glass scene’ has changed greatly but I feel that my work, while outwardly appearing very different, still retains the essential qualities I set out to explore thirty years ago.
There are always concerns each piece has to fulfil - the weight, the balance, the surface qualities and the way light is captured in the glass. Scale has never been a distraction - my pieces are more intimate objects to be not just looked at but looked into.
Three decades on, whatever the idea or theme, my work still has the same core values - integrity to the material and quality of craftsmanship.”
