CNC milling is a reductive process; objects are cut using a selection of different shaped tools from a rectangular or round billet of material. This process presents a substantial financial barrier to creating objects directly from silver. For this reason I predominantly make objects from aluminium, although I am attracted to the different qualities of silver . However, I have recently developed a technique which will allow me to mill directly into silver by casting
using sacrificial Rapid Prototyped models which are within 5% of the finished dimensions. Future plans are to secure funding to apply this research more fully to silver making.
