In Chinese metaphysics, bamboo is a symbol of modesty:
“Because its body is empty it can contain substances, because it is
hollow people can use it as instruments to make beautiful music”.
As a maker and artist born in Taiwan, bamboo was part of
my daily life. It grows widely in many Eastern countries and is
seen as a vital, everyday material. We use it to build houses,
vehicles, furniture, containers, tools, utensils and instruments.
As a silvermaker, now based in the UK, I am interested in exploring
how a very different material can be seen as part of everyday life.
By representing the form of bamboo, in silver, I am expressing a
different kind of everyday beauty for our contemporary lives.
