Merete Rasmussen

My work with abstract sculptural form is currently taking two directions:

- the double walled pieces where I work with solidity contra inner space, concave and convex surfaces together with sharp edges.

- the ‘single’ walled pieces, mainly asymmetrical with one line (edge) running through the whole form, connected.

They are often built in three connected parts; three being both a strong number and a balanced repetition of form.  The pieces are individual, although I like displaying them in a group. Even though the forms are sometimes complex, they all embody a certain simplicity and strength. To emphasize the form I use a matt surface and toned down colours.

Stoneware is my chosen material for its qualities – I like to challenge the material and my own skills by building complicated shapes; fragile in the building, drying and firing process which upon firing attain the strength to be handled and positioned without support.
