In my new work I wanted to use the tailoring objects that I remember investigating as a child in my father’s work studio.
And incorporating them into the bags that I designed and made in the past.
So I have used coloured tailors’ chalk, tape measures, cottons, buttons and pins.
I like the idea that these bags are difficult or even impossible to actually wear without marking your clothes, pricking your fingers or losing the buttons as you walk. And this is in conflict with the fact that bags are usually very practical things.
The chalk and measures and pins are an important part of the process of making clothes and accessories but are rarely seen – staying behind in the workshop as the bags are paraded in public.
This is a chance for these normally hidden workers to be seen and appreciated!
