Gareth Neal
In 2002 Gareth Neal set up his furniture design practice in the heart of the East End of London. He specialises in one-off’s for individual clients and companies, since 2002 his theories and aesthetics have moved on considerably. Drawing from his surroundings, using 3d computer drawing skills, and CNC processes, plus combining this with hand skills and high quality craftsmanship his designs have evolved into new and diverse territory.
This recent body of work first started developing in 2006 using themes touches on in earlier series but now the work has structured geometric exteriors, the negative space revealing traditional furniture styles and geometric forms as if through the erosion of time forms from the past are revealed.
The work, tries to engage with the viewer and create inter sector debate, between art, design and craft, between history and the contemporary, between the material and the immaterial.
Gareth Neal graduated from Buckinghamshire University’s ‘Furniture Design and Craftsmanship’ BA Hon’s in 1996 and ever since been in demand having been featured in numerous publications and exhibited around the world , from Sotheby’s in New York to the Victoria and Albert museum in London.
