Simon Moore

When I started glassmaking 28 years ago I was immediately struck by the spontaneity of the process. After four years of education, I was very lucky to meet a glassmaker called Ronnie Wilkinson. He had worked at Whitfiars Glass in Harrow since the age of fourteen, following on from his father and grandfather. Decades of knowledge were at my disposal, if I was prepared to work for it.

Many years later I was made Creative Director for Salviati and Manager of the small factory on the island of Murano. I worked alongside twelve glassmakers whose knowledge, similar to that of Ronnieís, went back decades, if not centuries. These two experiences underline for me the importance of appreciating traditions and of the disciplines of learning a craft.

At a time when our industry has all but died out I wonder who in this ever-growing global economy, will maintain these traditions. With each shipment of bought in ware, jobs disappear, knowledge is lost and the new generations of crafts people are left to struggle.

I set up Simon Moore Limited after three and a half years as Design Director for Dartington. After a further two years, having established a stable business platform, I went on to use my workshop as a training place for both potters and glassmakers in an attempt to put back some of what we have thrown away.
