Memories at the Glass House in 1987

I will always think back on my time as an assistant in 1987 at The Glasshouse with a special warm feeling in my heart.
After attending the Glass school in Orrefors Sweden, I was seeking some more artistic glass experience.
For me as a Swede it was a fantastic experience to take part in all the creativity, originality and professionalism that surrounded both the glass and the artists at The Glasshouse in Covent Garden. During that time it was Annette, Chris, David and Fleur that formed the Glasshouse.
The complete contrast between the very posh glass gallery and the ruff hot shop intrigued me and I felt immediately at home in the busy workshops.
Ron Wilkinson the old master glassmaker was for me very similar to other masters that I had met in Sweden. His skills where outstanding! His humour outrageous!

As young assistants, myself, Bob Crooks, Janusz Pozniak and later on Helena Kaiser, were given the opportunity to develop our glassmaking skills and creativity through the ěAssistant Saturdaysî when we were able to work on our own in the hot shop.
The Glasshouse had a continuous stream of visiting old colleagues, assistants and glass students from all around the world.
It is also thanks to Annette and Chris that later that year I started a degree in Farnham at The West Surrey College of Art & Design and finally became a ěglass personî.
Together with Stephen Procter, Ray Flavell, Tessa Clegg and others, they formed a unique glass education. To meet all these fantastic people and to be a part of ěThe Glasshouse and its Treeî has definitely formed me both as an artist and a person.
I feel honoured to be invited to this reunion and exhibition at the CAA some 20 years later.
