Alistair McCallum

Alistair has practiced the Japanese metal working technique of Mokume Gane (wood grain metal) for over 30 years. The technique involves soldering different metals together to produce a sandwich. By breaking through the top layers of metal into the ones below, one is able to produce patterned sheets of metal. Due to the highly decorative surface patterns produced using this technique, Alistair strongly believes that it is best used on simple forms, where the relationship of pattern to the form is in harmony. This element of balance is something that he became aware of when visiting Japan in 1978. This experience has greatly influenced his work ever since.
