Caroline Bartlett

The work in this exhibition continues to explore ideas of concealing and revealing, a theme central to Caroline Bartlettís work. Marks are used to indicate language through the use of formal visual components which do not communicate any specific meaning but hint at words and rhythmic notations, codes and symbols, pages and columns, crossing out and erasure, the overwriting of one writing system on another. These elements are composed into pictorial architecture in which the interaction between these printed, painted and stitched markings and the folded and cut apart surface is explored. The work here taps into the seductiveness of the written word and draws on both the visual and the tactile sense.
