Steven Newell

Steven Newell’s world is one of figurative mystery; ghostly monochromatic scenes in which whimsical mythological and modern-day dramas are played out. There is a boldness of form and modelling in Newells’s characters which gives his individual work – cased and sandblasted – a monumental quality. Few glass artists have conveyed such illusionism in their work, combining both humour and pathos. There is the same sense of history in elegant simply coloured footed vases and jugs, with their echos of early 18th century English glassware.
